If you want to snowshoe or walk your pet you may do so south of Downsville where the trails are not groomed.

If you are interested in more strenuous x-country, there is some excellent skiing at Hoffman Hills Park, just northeast of Menomonie. A self registration daily is required.  Pets not allowed.

RED CEDAR STATE PARK TRAIL, Menomonie-Downsville-Dunnville with connecting links to Eau Claire-Meridean-Caryville and Durand.
The Red Cedar State Park Trail follows the abandoned Milwaukee Road Railroad right-of-way along the Red Cedar River, beginning in Menomonie and ending at the trestle over the Chippewa River.  It provides 14.5 miles of well-maintained trail which makes for excellent hiking, biking and cross-country skiing.  The scenic journey along the trail often allows views of many types of wildlife including deer, fox, bald eagles, cranes, swans, turkeys, geese, herons and ospreys.  Access to the trail and parking areas are at Menomonie, Downsville, Dunnville and the Dunnville Wildlife Area. In addition, the Red Cedar State Park Trail now connects at the south end with the Chippewa State Trail. (See below)  Opened in the spring of 2003 is the Durand Trail, which runs from the trestle over the Chippewa River to the city of Durand some 7 miles to the South. This trail brings you into Durand at the East end of Main Street providing easy access to all that Durand has to offer.

CHIPPEWA RIVER TRAIL

The Chippewa River trail, completed in the summer of 1996, runs close to the Chippewa River from downtown Eau Claire through Caryville and Meridean to the end of the Red Cedar Trail, a distance of some 24 miles.  Spring and summer provide varied and abundant wildlife, wildflowers and berries to those who remain alert. Fall brings incredible colors as the seasons change, and winter provides wonders of its own for skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers. You can get further information about the Chippewa Trail online, or call the Eau Claire Convention & Visitor's Bureau at 1-800-344-3866 or (715) 839-1607.
